Northern Lights Of Old Aberdeen

The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen tartan, designed by David Main of Mains Highlandwear in Aberdeen, is a tribute to a cherished Scottish classic and the enduring charm of the Granite City. This unique tartan design commemorates the iconic song The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen, written by Mary Webb and her husband William, known by his stage name Mel.

The origins of the song are steeped in emotion and creativity. Mary, originally from Leamington Spa and living in London, worked as a concert pianist and hospital kitchen assistant during World War II. While working in London, she met Winnie Forgie, an Aberdonian friend who was deeply homesick, struggling with the distance from her beloved city. Moved by Winnie’s plight, Mary returned home and, together with her husband Mel, crafted a melody and lyrics meant to bring comfort and joy to their friend.

Despite never having set foot in Aberdeen herself, Mary poured her imagination into the song, capturing the magic of the Granite City through vivid imagery. This heartfelt composition soon struck a chord with many, growing in popularity beyond their wildest dreams. Mary shared the piece with Scots tenor Robert Wilson, who premiered the song to great acclaim at London’s prestigious Albert Hall.

Sadly, Mel passed away before he could witness the song’s live performances. In his honor, Mary joined Robert Wilson on stage in 1953 at Aberdeen’s Tivoli Theatre, where they performed The Northern Lights of Old Aberdeen. The song became a beloved anthem for Aberdonians, resonating with those at home and abroad.

The tartan itself captures the essence of the Northern Lights, or Aurora Borealis, often visible in the skies above Aberdeen. Its colors—vivid greens, blues, and purples—reflect the ethereal beauty of this natural phenomenon, symbolizing both the city’s charm and the heartfelt connection inspired by the song. David Main’s design ensures that the legacy of this iconic tune continues to be celebrated, weaving together history, emotion, and artistic brilliance.
